We all know Divergent, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, The Maze Runner, The Fault in Our Stars, Gone Girl – what’s coming up in the 2014 book-to-movie adaptation world. But what’s next? I’ve compiled a list of recently announced or in-production films based on books. This gives you plenty of time to pick them up and have exclusive bragging rights over the fact you read them first. Paper Towns by John Green
The Fault in Our Stars is one of the biggest book-to-film productions this year, slated for release on June 5 in the US. Next up for John Green’s exceptionally popular novels is a film adaptation of Paper Towns which has just been greenlighted! Nat Wolff, who plays supporting character Isaac in TFIOS will play the lead role of Quentin. Quentin Jacobsen – Q to his friends- is eighteen and has always loved the edgy Margo Roth Spiegelman.
One night, Q is basking in the predictable boringness of his life when Margo, dressed as a ninja, persuades him to partake in several hours of mayhem. Then she vanishes. Q follows Margo’s string of elaborate clues – including a poem about death. After an epic drive through the night, they catch up with Margo, and Q learns first-hand that the way you think about a person isn’t the way they actually are. Paper Towns should be heading to your cinema screen in 2015.
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Chloë Grace Moretz will plays Mia, a 17 year old girl who falls into a coma after a car crash claims her whole family. If I Stay by Gayle Forman was released in 2009, and many doubted its book-to-screen abilities due to the length of time Mia spends lingering between life and death whilst reflecting on her past experiences, a difficult sentiment to film! However, director RJ Cutler seems to have found a way to translate it to the big screen, so the film has a current US release date of August 22, 2014.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
Everyone is all about the David Fincher adaptation of Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike (watch the trailer here), but you may not know that Gillian Flynn’s earlier novel Dark Places is set to be released as a film this year as well! Starring Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult and Chloë Grace Moretz, Dark Places tells the story of Libby, the only surviving witness of a horrific massacre by her older brother of her mother and sisters. Twenty years later, she must face this terrible ordeal once again when a group of true-crime obsessives think her brother is innocent.
The mystery thriller is set for a tentative release in September this year. Gone Girl already has a teaser poster and trailer, and it is supposedly released a month later, so I get the feeling this one might be pushed back to ride on the back of the Gone Girl hype.
Robopocalypse by Daniel H Wilson
Robopocalypse by Daniel H Wilson is screaming to be made into a blockbuster, and Steven Spielberg agrees – signing on in 2013 to direct the film adaptation. It has all the telltale signs of a sci-fi hit – a tale set in the near future that finds the world thrown into chaos by rebelling artificial intelligences under the leadership of a murderous technology called Archos. Archos kills its creator and takes over the global network, triggering an unprecedented united front among all human cultures.
Robopocalypse was initially slated for release in April this year, but has been pushed back indefinitely, with Spielberg stating that the film is “too important” to be rushed, and that the script was not ready. Spielberg has a history of delaying film projects to fine-tune the scripts, sometimes scrapping them altogether and starting from scratch – and due to the outstanding quality of the work he produces, we’re not complaining!
