Spotlight on QBD Woodgrove

Our charismatic readers at Woodgrove QBD have stolen the QBD spotlight this week, shining a light on some fabulous books!

9780575081864Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill:
Judas Coyne is an aging rocker with a penchant for collecting the weird remnants of society. So, when an opportunity to purchase a ghost came across his path, he couldn’t resist. However, owning a ghost turns out to be nothing like he expected – especially when it becomes apparent that the ghost in question appears to have a vendetta against him. Joe Hill’s first full-length novel is an absolute delight for fans of horror, harking back to the earlier writing’s of his father, Stephen King. Not only does Hill have a talent for weaving a dark tapestry with words, he seems to know how to bring the reader’s worst fears to life. There were a few nights whilst reading this book where sleeping with a light on was preferable. – Andrée (Store Manager)

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty:
Lives are shattered and changed forever when a letter is discovered that should never have been written. Written with wit and a discerning fondness for her characters, Australian author Liane Moriarty weaves a dark and thought provoking story. Once started I found this hard to put down and have since read more of Liane’s books which are equally as rewarding. – Lisa

9780992334468The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham:
A quirky tale of resentment and long held grudges.Set in a small town in the Victorian wheat fields , the exotic misfit Tilly Dunnage returns home to care for her mad mother. Tilly is met with suspicion, until the towns folk discover her skills as a dressmaker. She meets with a surprising array of characters, including a feather loving policeman, and unexpectedly falls in love ,could this be her downfall again. I really enjoyed this unusual read and am looking forward to seeing the movie, which has just been released. – Sue

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty:
It is the annual Pirriwee Public School Trivia Night. An Audrey Hepburn and Elvis dress up night. Lots of cocktails and no appetizers leads to things getting very ugly, very quickly. Somebody dies. But is it murder or a tragic accident? Liane Moriarty keeps us guessing as to the who, why and how as we go back in time to 6 months earlier. There we are introduced to Madeline, Celeste and Jane, the three main characters, all mothers from the school, who are all at a cross roads in their lives. We soon discover that not everything is as it seems in their lives and that everyone has secrets, big and little. Funny. Witty. Sad. This book is all of this and more. Soon, it will be made into a TV series by HBO, starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. Time to get reading! – Julie

9780575117051Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris:
Driving home late one night Sookie comes across a half naked vampire on the side of the road. He has no memory of who he is but Sookie knows him as the ruthless Viking Vampire Eric.. In this book we get to see a soft, vulnerable side of Eric and as with most of the True Blood books lots of violence, blood and sex. I’m a fan of this series and I can’t get enough… – Belinda

The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons:
The Bronze Horseman trilogy is one of my all time favorites set in the 1940’s.
During WW11 an affair begins with and a young girl and an army officer. Not only do they have to deal with problems regarding her family but also the country (Russia) goes to war with Germany. It is a beautiful love story but with war approaching it brings a lot of heart ache. – Janet

9781406307627City of Bones by Cassandra Clare:
When my friend recommended I read this book because she loved them, I’ll admit I was skeptical. Never had I read a book about angels, demons, shadow hunters and even evil fairies. Once I started reading I just couldn’t put the book down. You really want the best for the characters you are introduced to in this book and throughout the rest of the Mortal Instruments series. As the series moves with Clary and have you can’t help but grow with them and try to warn them when something is coming, and most of all you don’t want the story to end. This series has love, mystery, thrills and of course vampires and werewolves to make it paranormal. The Clockwork series is also another way to continue living in the world you become a part of. With a new series coming out in March with future shadow hunters and evil fairies there is always a way to be in this marvelous world Cassandra Clare has written. – Monique
