Daughter of Smoke and Bone – Laini Taylor

“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love…”

9781444722659In museums all over the world, the most unlikely of artefacts are going missing: teeth. The tooth thief in question is blue-haired, vivacious art student Karou, whose foster parent, a Chimaera by the name of Brimstone, needs them for unknown reasons. In exchange for her midnight charades, he grants her minor wishes.

Despite being raised by Brimstone, who is part-human, part-ram and part-lion, and his charming companions Issa, Ysari and Twiga, Karou’s life is relatively normal. She lives in a little apartment in Prague, attends art school and has a slightly egotistical boyfriend. Never has she questioned what Brimstone does with the teeth she gathers for him, but when a team of angels incinerate the portals linked to Brimstone’s world, Karou’s life is tipped upside down. Trapped and cut off from her magical family, she must rely on her wit, instinct and skills if she’s going to get them out alive. There’s only one problem: one of the angels is hellbent on her destruction and trying to keep a lid on secrets that could get them all killed.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a fresh, unique fantasy novel that portrays the battle between the so-called good and evil in a new light. It contains such a vast, intricately weaved storyline that it’s almost impossible to tell you how fantastic it is without accidental spoilers! There are so many amazing twists and turns and it’s such an engulfing read that you’re turning that last page before you even realise it. With a cliff-hanging that left me breathless, Daughter of Smoke and Bone is well worth the read.

“… It did not end well.”
