Book of the month: At the Water’s Edge

9781742379883 Set at the end of the Second World War, At The Water’s Edge is an enchanting vintage romance with a twist.

After making fools of themselves at a very Gatsby-esque New Year’s Eve party, Ellis Hyde and his wife Madeline, are cast out by his parents. In an alcohol-fueled, desperate move to regain his father’s approval, Ellis and his friend Hank drag Maddie off to Scotland in the hopes of “bagging” the Loch Ness Monster.

After a particularly brutal voyage, the unfortunate trio arrive in Scotland to a less than hospitable welcome. Often left to her devices, Maddie struggles with her unfortunate past, her  increasingly unhappy marriage and her attraction to her rugged Scottish host- Angus. However her melancholy is tempered somewhat by the beauty of her surroundings and the girlfriends she begins to make.

As the attraction between Maddie and Angus grows, and the distance between her and Ellis becomes insurmountable, things boil to a head.  After some disturbing revelations about her husband come to light Maddie must make a heart-breaking choice- to save the man she loves by leaving him behind, or save herself.

Completely absorbing, this novel is an easy read that will have you biting your nails to the very end!
