Dracula by Bram Stoker:

“He throws no shadow; he make in the mirror no reflect… He has the strength of many in his hand… He can transform himself to wolf… he can be as bat… He can come in mist which he create… He come on moonlight rays as elemental dust.. He become so small… He can, when once he find his way, come out from anything or into anything, no matter how close it be bound or even fused up with fire…”

The literary horror that has stood the test of time, Dracula. The horror atmosphere in this novel comes from the suspense and building fear. The way this novel reads is from the journals of the main characters… as the reader, this causes a feeling of understanding with the characters correlating stories and makes the story to feel real. The one criticism I have is that Bram Stoker was a bit repetitive at times which was a little tedious. The story was not so disconnected from the world we live in… beware the a feeling of dread when out by yourself in the dark. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. – Sam-Maree

American Gods by Neil Gaiman:

Shadow has just been released from prison early due to his wife’s suspicious death. On the plane home he meets Wednesday, a odd man who claims to be a God and demands that Shadow start working for him. From that moment on, everything Shadow assumed about the world is turned on it’s head.

Neil Gaiman is, in my opinion the best modern fable writer around, and American Gods thoroughly upholds his reputation. Gaiman’s fascination with mythology and love of modernising things tie together perfectly throughout this book, as you’re reacquainted with God’s such as Odin and Shiva whilst also being introduced to the deities of technology. Anyone who has a love for mythology and saga’s will adore this book, and there’s now a highly acclaimed TV show to accompany it. – Peta

Year One by Nora Roberts:

Nora Roberts has moved on from romance with her first thrilling fantasy called Year One. A deadly virus, referred to as The Doom, spreads over New York city, killing almost everyone in its path. As billions fall sick and die, there are few survivors who find themselves with strange new supernatural abilities. The immune flee the city and unite to find answers behind the deadly virus that is killing, yet savoring so many and the darkness that has consumed the world.
I was hesitant about this book being a typical Nora Roberts romance, but was in awe to be spellbound by the unique tale and captivated from chapter one. It is a must read for fans of Nora, but also for anyone searching for a new fantasy world to get lost in. I am eagerly awaiting book two’s release later this year! – Cassandra

This book has changed my perception of life; that the destiny is written by fate and fate is guided by our decisions. This novel comes as a reminder to me to understand that the initial goal that our hearts desires never can subside.- Albert
