Throughout the novel, you are filled with this sense of looking back, on reflecting upon Kathy’s childhood and how it has affected her relationships beyond Hailsham. Kathy spends the novel dissecting her childhood and trying to piece together the intricate puzzle which is her life and the meaning behind it.
