Costume Ideas for Book Week 2025

Book Week is definitely a highlight on the calendar of every child, young and old alike, and this year it falls on the 16-23 August.

Here at QBD Books, we LOVE celebrating Book Week and this year’s celebrations will be EXCELLENT.

Across Australia, our QBD Books team members will join in the spirit of dressing up as their favourite book characters and spread the joy of reading!

The theme for Book Week, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) is Book An Adventure, this theme invites children to embark on an imaginative exploration through the pages of a book!

So let’s go on a quick journey of my Top 10 book and costumes for this year!

  1. Detective Beans: The Case Of The Missing Hat.

My go to will always be Detective Beans. This super adorable graphic novel by Li Chen came out in June 2024, and features the world’s most adorable detective who is out to solve the mystery of who took his hat. All you need is a brown cap, coat, and magnifying glass to be the world’s #1 self-proclaimed detective!

2. LGB Super Mario Little Golden Book

So many of us grew up playing Mario, and with the recent (and upcoming!) movie, what better character to go as this Book Week: pop on a red shirt, blue overall, and a red cap and you’re off on many adventures in Mushroom Kingdom!

3) Nevermoor 01: The Trials Of Morrigan Crow

Nevermoor is my all time favourite read and this book is full of amazing characters to go as this Book Week! From Morrigan Crow to her best friends and dragon rider Hawthorne Swift, there are a multitude of characters to dress up as this year

4) LGB Taylor Swift

Taylor has dominated the world over the last few years with her Eras Tour, so every Swiftie has the perfect person here to go as while rocking out to her dozens of hits!

5) Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

Another classic that so many of us grew up with – this Book Week go on an adventure as Max as you come across monsters and make new friends!

6) LGB Lionel Messi or Football Superstars: Ronaldo Rules

We can’t forget out sporty readers, so pick up a biography on Messi or Ronaldo and throw on your football boots and you’re set to score a goal this August

7) Bluey: Zoo

Australia’s favourite family the Heelers! This Book Week go as Bluey or Bingo as you get into all the shenanigans of these playful kiddos!

8) Percy Jackson 01: Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief

With the next season soon to hit Netflix, return to Camp Half-Blood and get prepared to battle a minotaur and save your friends from a Medusa!

9) The Very Hungry Caterpillar

For our little fans, get ready to eat your way through all your favourite foods on your way to growing up!

10) We have to end the list with maybe two of the biggest characters in the world at the moment: Elphaba and Glinda! LGB I Am Elphaba and LGB I Am Glinda!

If you want to be Popular this Book Week and Defy Gravity, then make sure to keep Dancing Through Life as you recreate some of the most iconic characters on a screen at the moment!

These are just a handful of my top picks for this Book Week, but pop into any QBD store and our team will be excited to help you find the perfect book for your budding adventurer for the 2025 Book Week!
