The Immortal Prince by Jennifer Fallon

He is the stuff of myths and legends. She will be his salvation.

9780732283353Arkady Desean has never given much thought to the myth of the Tide Lords, an apparent ancient immortal race who have the ability to command Tide magic. As a historian, her world is made up of facts, not stories and folklore. But one day, a man sentenced to be executed by hanging manages to survive the ordeal, claiming that he is Cayal the Immortal Prince and Arkady is sent in as a critical eye to examine his extraordinary tale…

… and what a tale it is. Spanning centuries, the immortals story is nothing short of a fantasy in Arkady’s mind, and she’s sure the man is clearly delusional. If not for the fact that he’d survived being hanged, she’d write him off, but it’s enough to sow seeds of doubt. If she’s willing to believe his tale, then she has to accept that her world is in danger: the Tide Lords are on the rise once more and the ruthless brethren will stop at nothing to find themselves seats of power to wreak havoc with. With her husband and few close friends occupied with matters of the realm, far beyond the so-called immortal, Arkady must decide for herself what to believe and if she can survive her reality being shattered beyond repair.

The Immortal Prince is only the first step on an incredible four-book journey that is nothing short of brilliant. Weaved into the storyline is politics, love, drama, subterfuge and pulse-pounding action. So many individual little plotlines run parallel through the book and they all weave together seamlessly to create a masterpiece. If Game of Thrones was packed with vicious, ruthless immortals, the Tide Lords series is how it would all go down.

Flights of Fantasy

"Dragon Fantasy": (def) Fantasy novels which contain a dragon/s as a main protagonist or major element in the plot.

Dragons have long appeared in fantasy writing. Often they are awe-inspiring, mythical, greedy, carnivorous beasts to be feared 'lest they eat you alive' or background players in a larger plot (Hello Smaug!). But novels where dragons take centre stage are on the rise, and we have selected a few where you can really appreciate the intelligence, and in some cases, cunning, of our scaly friends:

9780552566001Seraphina by Rachel Hartman: The kingdom of Goredd is populated by humans and dragons who fold themselves into a human form. The uneasy peace between the two races is threatened when a member of the royal family is murdered, and a dragon appears to be responsible.
Into this comes Seraphina, a gifted musician who joins the royal court as the assistant to the court composer. She is soon drawn into the murder investigation and, as she uncovers hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace in Goredd for good, finds herself caught desperately in the middle of the tension.
For Seraphina hides a secret - the secret behind her musical gift - and if she is found out, her life is in serious danger . . .

9781743566619Talon by Julie Kagawa: Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragonslayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.
Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

9780552155519Eragon by Christopher Paolini: When Eragon finds a polished stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands...

9780007273751The Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb: Long ago the powerful blue dragon Tintaglia aided the people of the Trader cities, staving off an invasion by their enemies, bringing other dragons to their ancient cocooning grounds in the Rain Wilds. The people are fascinated by the return of the dragons:  it is as if they symbolise the return of hope to their war-torn world. However the new hatchlings are born weak and flightless, deformed by a river turned toxic. If neglected, the creatures will die and so an epic journey begins to the legendary Elderling city of Kelsingra - a place the dragons can call home.
But they cannot get there on their own: a band of dragon keepers, hunters and chroniclers must attend them.

Meet Some Unlikely Heroes

There is fear and hatred in your eyes. To you I am a monster, a skulker in the shadows, a fiend to scare your children with. A creature to be hunted down and slaughtered like a beast in the fields. It is time you paid heed to the beast. And see the beast in yourself.

- From Orcs by Stan Nicholls

We all know the classic "monster" stories, the ones where evil creatures with souls as black as night lurch from dark shadows to tear you limb from limb. But what if these creatures aren't the villains we suppose them to be? What if they could be good? Heroes even?

Here's a few of our favourites that feature these typical antiheroes as main characters:

9780575074873Orcs by Stan Nicholls: In Maras Dantia, the human scourge are killing the land, magic is draining out of the ground and the glaciers are advancing further north. Orcs dislike humans, who have brought farming and industry to Maras Dantia, as well as the Uni and Mani religions. And, of course, humans dislike any 'thing' that isn't human.
Born into this world is Stryke and his loyal warband of orcs. Enslaved to the evil (and psycho) Queen Jennesta, they have been sent on a mission to "collect" an ancient artifact from the humans.
Unfortunately for Stryke not everything goes as planned, and now he and his orcs are on the run for their lives...
Full of action, nail-biting adventure and black humour, Stryke and his band of rogue orcs try to muddle their way through without getting killed by anyone.

Reviewsday: Children of Fire by Drew Karpyshyn

The fires of Chaos burn as the world turns.

Four children hold it's fate in their hands.

Will they save the world, or doom it?

9780091952839Long ago the gods chose a great hero, Daemron, to act as their champion in the mortal realm and to stand against the demonic spawn of Chaos. To help him succeed, they gifted Daemron with three magical Talismans: a sword, a ring, and a crown. But the power at his command corrupted Daemron and he dared to challenge the gods themselves. Siding with the Chaos spawn, Daemron waged a mighty battle against the Immortals. A battle that he lost. The Talismans were lost, hidden away in time and memory, and the Gods sacrificed themselves to create the Legacy- a magical barrier to contain Chaos.
A religious cabal called The Order have been tasked to maintain this magical shield, protecting the world from the Chaos and its minions- and they will do anything to protect it.

Now the Legacy is weakening. On the other side, the fallen champion grows strong enough to cast his essence out into the world. Across the scattered corners of the land, four children are born under a red moon of suffering and strife, each embodying one trait of Daemron himself—wizard, warrior, prophet, king.

Though Keegan, Cassandra, Scythe and Vaaler grow up in different places with different lives, their fates are intertwined - but whether it is their destiny to restore the Legacy or release Daemron upon the world remains unknown.

Chaos cannot be controlled. It has it's own mind.
