QBD’s 25 Books of Christmas: #8

Our Elves are delving into the world of Westeros with this addition to their Christmas wishlist!

Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals – in stature if not experience.Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg – whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king.

Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lay ahead for Dunk and Egg; as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS brings together for the first time the first three official prequel novellas to George R.R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire, set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory.

Featuring more than 160 illustrations by Gary Gianni, one of the finest fantasy artists of our time, this beautiful volume will transport readers to the world of the Seven Kingdoms in an age of bygone chivalry.

Perfect for lovers of Game of Thrones and fantasy fiction.

Journey around Westeros with Dunk and Egg

We know all George R R Martin fans have been waiting interminably for the new book in the Game of Thrones series, and apparently it is coming...

...just not yet.

In the meantime he has released a tantalising new adventure to keep us in touch with the world of Westeros, A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms. Taking place 100 years before the events in Game of Thrones, it follows the story of Ser Duncan the Tall, a lowly hedge knight seeking his fortune through brave deeds. Luckily, or perhaps unluckily, he unwittingly takes a Targaryen princeling to squire - Aegon. Together on their journeys across the seven kingdoms, he tries to teach 'Egg' some knightly ways, and Egg tries to teach 'Dunk' some courtly manners, often with dubious results.

downloadLessons from a Hedge Knight:
* Hedge Knights serve where they will for causes they believe in
* Do what your told or you'll get a clout in the ear
* "A squire must keep a courteous tongue"
* Treat ladies with respect
* "Sit and eat and listen and might be you will learn some things"
* "A squire needs be strong" This may involve seeing something gory, or physical labour.

The adventures of Dunk & Egg have everything you have come to expect from a George R R Martin fantasy work- knights, chivalry, entitled lords, dragon eggs, damsels in distress and action galore. If you have never read any of the Game of Thrones novels, don't worry- this book can be read as a one off! (and it's much less gory). Perfect for dipping your toe in the water.

The Ice Dragon Cometh!

Fans of George R R Martin stand up and rejoice! A new book is coming in December!

Okay, so it's not the next installment of Game of Thrones- but it is set in the same world (and personally I'm dying to read it!)- even better, it's ILLUSTRATED. Which makes it a perfect gift (and Christmas is looming!).

ice dragon

In the world of A Song of Ice and Fire the ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear, for no man had ever tamed one. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land. But Adara was not afraid. For Adara was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone, even the Old Ones, could remember.

Adara could not remember the first time she had seen the ice dragon. It seemed that it had always been in her life, glimpsed from afar as she played in the frigid snow long after the other children had fled the cold. In her fourth year she touched it, and in her fifth year she rode upon its broad, chilled back for the first time. Then, in her seventh year, on a calm summer day, fiery dragons from the North swooped down upon the peaceful farm that was Adara's home. And only a winter child-and the ice dragon who loved her-could save her world from utter destruction.
