Reviewsday: I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

malalaI am Malala is the incredible story about a young girl fighting for her right to be educated. Malala was shot by the Taliban in Pakistan for being a loud and proud activist for her right to have an education. Malala never stopped going to school, even when she was told it was too dangerous. Malala had the firm belief that even the Taliban would not harm a small child - but that is exactly what they did. They shot her in front of her friends on her way home from school.

"One child, one teacher, one paper, one pen can change the world." This is Malala's firm belief, even after all of the horrors she has experienced. This book, although centered around life in a Taliban-controlled Pakistan, is at its heart about a young girl who knew her voice and her cause could make a difference. For Malala education is the difference between life and death.

Every teacher and student needs to read this book so that they can understand the importance of education. We take our rights and freedom for granted in this country, and Malala reminds us just how hard some people have to fight to go to school each day.
